Over the past 5 months we’ve been able to hold our ‘recession busting’ cable prices in the face of copper rising from $1.40/lb. in January to $2.30/lb in June. This month we have come to a point where we have to pass on some of those increases. You’ll find that most items remain unchanged, but there will be some 2-8%  increases on Cam Extensions, Banded Cam sets, Bare End Tail Sets, and Multi-cable extensions. Since the amount of copper in each cable assembly type and length is different, the percentage of the increase varies accordingly. We have worked hard to keep the majority of the increases at less than 5% and none more than 8%. While nobody likes an increase, we hope you will appreciate our ongoing efforts to keep your cable costs low, and helping you to keep your competitive edge. Go to www.lexproducts.com and enter your customer number to download pricing.

The buzz surrounding Lex Products’ 6-Circuit Live Tester started when Lex brought it to LDI last November. When rental houses and production electricians visited Lex’s booth they were thrilled with the idea of a compact 19-pin multi-cable tester that could be used single-ended on powered cable. They also had a number of suggestions for usability and ergonomic enhancements. Lex listened and the 6-Circuit Live Tester launched this week has many of those suggestions incorporated in its final design.
While other multi-cable testers require the user to disconnect the cables at both ends and attach a specific power supply, the Lex 6-Circuit Live Tester allows the user to diagnose wiring problems on powered lighting rigs without disconnecting the cables from the power source. This saves time and allows the user to solve problems more quickly, which can be critical in allowing the show to go on. The tester confirms correct power connections and grounding for all six circuits, using connected dimmed or non-dimmed power, with an easy to understand LED display.

On top of the time-saving convenience inherent in the original design of the 6-Circuit Live Tester, Lex added a D-ring so the user can tie the tester off to make sure it doesn’t get dropped or lost. The placement and intensity of the LEDs were adjusted to improve visibility and circuit changes were made to accommodate a variety of dimmer types. Lex is proud that the final product is truly the result of collaboration with its customers, making the 6-Circuit Live Tester a user friendly tool that is a great addition to any tech toolbelt, tool kit, or test bench. Convention centers, by their nature, are big users of temporary power distribution. Their biggest challenge is being able to set up several hundred drops of power quickly and reliably. The Lex Stackable Dog House provides a unique solution that directly addresses this challenge.

This product came about after a request from major convention center. They wanted a durable 6-circuit Dog House with the addition of circuit breaker protection.
This product takes the traditional Dog House to the next level by providing 6 circuits with durability and proper circuit protection in a durable, stackable enclosure. We’ve taken our large rubber box technology and shrunk it down into this compact doghouse with impact resistant HDPE sides. The ability to stack it means that it stores easily, and is less likely to be damaged when being transported.

Motion picture and television shoots generally use a 400A power backbone with 16 series Cam-type connectors, dropping down to a couple of 200A distribution boxes. In some cases however, they want to go straight to a 400A distribution box. The Lex 400A 3-Phase Motion Picture box provides the ability to break out a single 400A feed into both 120V and 220V 100A stage pin receptacles to supply 12k and 24k incandescent lighting fixtures.

We developed this box at the request of two of our dealers. They were unhappy with the metal boxes made by our competitors and wanted to take advantage of our durable rubber enclosures. We were happy to accommodate them and they have been so pleased with the result, we decided to make it a standard product.

Last month we asked you "Where does the term California Style" come from?

Here's our answer, courtesy of Arnold Tang:

The Cal-Style twist lock provides separate safety ground and neutral connections for 120/240VAC 3-pole 4-wire construction power, developed by the California State OSHA agency as a safety improvement over past practices that lacked a separate safety ground connection.  The Cal-Style twist lock can be distinguished from NEMA twist-locks by the presence of a shroud surrounding the male plug's pins (which also serves as the ground connection) and a "pointy" pin at the center of the female connector.

In April's Livewire we forgot  to recognize the fastest entries from the 20th anniversary egg hunt. Robert Thorpe at Earl Girls clocked in first at under 20 minutes! Following him were Rocky Harlow at Production Advantage, Scott Warner at High Output and Justin Vanderbeck at PRG. Thanks to everyone else who participated! Hope you enjoyed the polos. There's no contest this month, but check back for July's issue when we will resume our Trivia Contest.
